Derek Brown, a 6-foot-2 point guard for Chino Hills (Calif.) High who received votes in the
Long Beach Press Telegram's
annual "Best in the West" boys basketball player ratings, has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to attend San Jose State University beginning the 2010 Fall semester. George Nessman, the Spartans' men's basketball head coach made the announcement.
In the last two seasons, Brown led his team to 52 victories, a pair of Sierra League championships and back-to-back tournament appearances in the California Interscholastic (C.I.F.) Division I championship.
"D.J. (Derek) Brown is clearly one of the premier high school guards in California. D.J. is a hard-nosed competitor who can shoot, handle the ball and make plays. We are thrilled that D.J. has decided to be come a Spartan, and we anticipate with confidence that he will make a large and successful impact for our program during his collegiate career," says the San Jose State head coach.
The left-handed shooter, presently a high school senior, was one of only two juniors named a first-team All-C.I.F. Southern Section Division I-A player following his 2009 championship season. Brown led his team in scoring and assists with averages of 16.6 points and 5.7 assists per game. As a sophomore, he handed out 5.1 assists and scored 13.9 points per game.
Brown was identified in 2008 as one of the top-60 players in Southern California's Class of 2010 high school seniors by fullctpress.net, a website that specializes in area coverage of high school and community college basketball. Following the 2009 season, the newest addition to the Spartans' program was invited to play for the South team in the annual Battle of the Best Showdown all-star game at Oakland's Laney College.
