Jacksonville, Fla.-----There will be a full schedule of football in Spartan Stadium this November with
San Jose State
University's three home games and the addition of the Bay Area's newest professional football team, the California Redwoods of the United Football League, facing the Las Vegas Locos on November 14. Tom Bowen, San Jose State University's director of athletics, made the announcement for the university.
"San Jose State actively courted and remains engaged in meaningful discussions with the United Football League regarding playing in Spartan Stadium in its inaugural season. Our new FieldTurf playing surface allows us to schedule more athletics events," says Bowen. The San Jose State Spartans have three November home games starting with the Sunday, November 8 ESPN nationally-televised game against the University of Nevada.
"In and around our last home football game on October 10, both of our successful soccer teams played in Spartan Stadium on back-to-back nights, then we had the football game and a third soccer match the next day. The playing surface looked great after four consecutive days of athletics competition.
"We are delighted to host (Coach) Denny Green and the California Redwoods and their fans here in Spartan Stadium."
"Spartan Stadium has always been in our plans to use as a secondary venue to AT&T Park during baseball season. By moving one of our games from AT&T Park to San Jose State, we are able to get a feel for Spartan Stadium in preparation for next year while broadening our Redwoods fan base," says United Football League commissioner Michael Huyghue.
When the Redwoods host the Las Vegas Locos in Spartan Stadium, the Spartans will be playing at Utah State in Logan, Utah in a Western Athletic Conference match-up.
