Bellows Earns National, Conference Awards
San Jose State University's Kyle Bellows has earned both national and conference weekly honors for his outstanding performance on the baseball diamond over five road games last week. The junior shortstop and San Jose native out of Santa Teresa High School was selected as one of four Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week, as well as the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for the week of May 4-10.
Bellows is believed to be the Spartans' first Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honoree since Matt Durkin was chosen on March 10, 2003, after posting a five-hit, complete-game shutout against rival Santa Clara, with a career-high 15 strikeouts and no walks.
Bellows was selected alongside a West Coast-heavy group this week, with San Diego State's national strikeout leader and top draft prospect Stephen Strasburg, who struck out 17 in a no-hit performance at home over Air Force, senior Stanford first baseman Brent Milleville, who hit two grand slams among four home runs during a five-game week, driving in 16, and Missouri outfielder Greg Folgia, who belted four home runs and knocked in 20 runs over four games.
