Inside Sparta will be searching high and low for those recruits that have been contacted by, or have shown an interest in, San Jose State. We start our recruiting series with 2010 Quarterback prospect Andrew Lachelt of Ontario (Calif.) Christian High School.

Being recruited to play at the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I) level is something most football players only dream of. That dream is a reality for 6-foot-2, 184-pound quarterback Andrew Lachelt of Ontario (Calif.) Christian High School.

After a stellar sophomore campaign that saw him pass for over 1000 yards and throw 11 touchdowns leading to a QB rating of 84, a knee injury stunted his junior year effort. "I didn't do as well because of the injury," Lachelt told Inside Sparta, "I had ACL surgery in December and I am at about 90-percent now. I'll be cleared for full play on May 2."

Lachelt lists his top-five favorite colleges in order as Oregon, Boise State, Nebraska, UCLA, and San Diego State. However, one stands above the rest. "Oregon is my favorite right now and I'd probably commit if they offered," he said. "I've been there twice and love it. I have a great relationship with (New Oregon Head Coach) Chip Kelly, and the facilities are amazing."

Having family in the area is also plus. He has an uncle that attended Oregon, and his aunt is an Oregon State alumnae.

So where do the Spartans stand? "I've received some mail from them and they've asked me to come up to their camp," Lachelt said. "I'm looking to get out of California so at this time I'm not going to take a look at them."

One out of state destination could put him on the other side of the line against San Jose State. "I like Boise State a lot too, as a matter of fact my dad really likes them," he said. "I'm going up there during their spring practice session."

Overcoming his injury and showing coaches he is fully recovered is only part of the battle for gaining the coveted scholarship offer. "The Oregon coaches told me I need to work on some of my mechanics," Lachelt said, without going into detail. "I've been going down to San Diego State every Saturday for the last three years and working with QB coach George Whitfield, Jr."

He added that Nebraska and Oregon are recruiting him as a quarterback, while Boise State is looking at him as an athlete. "They said they'd look at me at QB but there are other options," he said. "I just want to make sure I can play again before I start really worrying about my recruiting."

Lachelt said he will look into attending the Scout Combine being held May 30 at Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington, Calif.
