Fresno State shot below a 40% clip for the afternoon and struggled as poorly from the foul line making 11-of-19. Leading scorer Kevin Foster failed to find his shot throughout the game hitting just 2-of-9 from the field for five points. Kevin Olekaibe wasn’t much better making 3-of-11 for nine points.
Meanwhile Long Beach State had four players in double figures led by Peter Pappageorge with 23 points. The 49ers’s 13-4 edge in fast break points was the difference in the game. But the Bulldogs will have a chance to avenge the loss a week from tomorrow as both teams square off at The Pyramid in Long Beach.
“It’s tough against a team that is beatable,” said Allen Huddleston, who led the Bulldogs with 13 points. “We definitely like having a chance to play them again.”
Jerry Brown was a bright spot for the Bulldogs as he recorded eight points and nine rebounds in a team-high 34 minutes. Much heralded true freshman Robert Upshaw also scored eight points with six boards in his Save Mart Center debut.
“He needs to be a junkyard dog this year,” head coach Rodney Terry said about Brown.
Tyler Johnson was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 10 points. Huddleston played only five first half minutes as he sat with two early fouls.
Fresno State led by as many as nine in the first half, 29-20, with 7:15 to play before the half. LBSU used a 10-0 run to take the lead and led at the break, 37-34.
The ‘Dogs drop to 3-2 and will take on Southern Illinois Wednesday night before facing the 49ers.
