OL Ron Scoggins Taking Time, Sets a Visit
Scoggins already has three offers in his pocket - Fresno State, UNLV, and San Jose State. He took an official visit to Fresno State in early October, and has set up another official visit.
"I'll be going up to San Jose State on Dec. 9," he said.
While the Spartans are certainly in the hunt they're probably in third position as far as the teams that have offered. Scoggins spoke highly of Fresno State and UNLV, and said he feels most comfortable with both staffs. But that doesn't mean he'll pick either one.
"My coaches told me to expect more offers," he said. "So I'm in no hurry to decide and nobody is really a favorite."
The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Scoggins added that he thinks UCLA is close to offering, and another school in the B1G is showing interest.
"I may be taking an official visit to Illinois this weekend," he said. "They've been talking to me a lot and we're going to try and set that up this week."
He said he visited UCLA for their spring game and has also taken an unofficial to USC.
Scoggins said all the schools are recruiting him for the offensive line, and that he doesn't play any defense. He'll play guard at the next level.
Bishop Gorman is a national powerhouse and is 5-1 on the season. The only ding on their schedule being a close 20-17 loss to No. 10 in the nation Armwood High School in Seffner, Fla. Even with the loss the Gaels are ranked No. 14 in the country. The numbers are from the USA Today computer rankings. Since the Armwood game nobody has scored more than a touchdown on Bishop Gorman except for perennial Southern California titan Servite High School in Anaheim. That game was televised nationally on ESPN.
While it's easy to assume the UNLV lineage could prevail, Scoggins said his dad is letting him make up his own mind. Also, the younger Scoggins has a pretty good idea of what he wants.
"I'm looking for a school with good academics and coaches I get along with and will help me get to the next level," he said. "I'd like it so my friends and family could come see me play once in a while."
College for Scoggins will also be about numbers, and not all about football stats. He said he wants to major in accounting or real estate.
"I like math and working with numbers," he said.
The big man said he'd like to make a decision sometime between the end of his season and Signing Day.
